Collaborative law is a new process in the State of Washington’s legal arena. In this process, both parties, through the representation of their attorney, sign an agreement to stay out of court, eliminating this ever present legal tactic and threat. The participants work collaboratively to resolve the issues at hand in a respectful manner. This typically takes place through a series of meetings wherein the parties’ interests remain the focus of attention rather than their positions on the issues. Additional team members may be added to enhance communication skills to help ensure that both parties develop goals, problem-solving techniques and in the end, create a durable settlement.
